The service is a function of Corporate IT Services out-posted to the Education and Libraries directorate. It is dedicated to the provision of ICT support services to schools, the LEA and the Library Service. Support services are traded on an annual subscription basis and are managed through specific Service Level Agreements. Training is paid for as used. Two packages are available for schools, support for Management and Admin systems and support for curriculum systems.
Underpinned by help-desk support, the main functions of the service are to provide the following:-

    Support for ICT strategy development, i.e. NGfL, EDP, School development plans, Library plans;
Support for schools broadband network, including design, implementation and continued support of associated servers and connectivity;
MIS applications support and development, i.e. EMS (Education Management System), SIMS (School Information Management System), Galaxy (Library Management System), AQUA (Adult Education);
Advice on appropriate hardware, software and networking solutions;
Hardware and software support in relation to PC desktops and peripherals;
Management of school mail servers, web servers, proxy and web-filtering;
Training in the appropriate use of Management Information Systems;
Support for internet and e-mail, including client access and usage;
Network administration, maintenance and support;     Virus protection and disinfection.
Project management for technical implementations; System backup and disaster recovery;
Small database applications development; System security;
Support for school web-site publishing; Network design and installation;

Staff Details & Responsibilities

Jim Lowden
ICT Team Manager (Education and Schools)

Responsibilities include project co-ordination and management, design and implementation of technical solutions & strategy for NGfL. Definition and dissemination of technical standards and procedures. Technical consultancy & strategy. Support and advice for ICT developments.

Tony Burns
IT Support Officer

Responsibilities include management support e.g. procurement, inventory and stock control, service administration and helpdesk.

 

The remainder of the service is split into 3 teams each with responsibility for specific functions of the service.
